I found a patch at http://makrotopia.org/browser/makrosys/makrobe/ruby-serialport/patches/10-fix-for-ruby-1.9 that got it working. You can git a tree with patch already applied (and version number incremented to avoid confusion) from http://github.com/edebill/ruby-serialport
